The group wanted to release this song as a way to thank their fans for their continued support. In addition, a portion of each song sale will go towards helping youth overcome addictions. Read their statement below:
“To our fans,
We knew today would be a rough day for many of you so we decided to release a surprise single 'OVERDOSE' as a thank you for all of your support and understanding.
We'll be playing this song every night on The OVERDOSE TOUR beginning Nov 11th and ending Dec 18th. Grab your tickets here and make sure you learn the words!
As for the song itself, a portion of proceeds from each single sale will go towards helping youth overcome addictions. We hope to keep as many of you around as possible. You can purchase 'OVERDOSE' on Apple Music here.
Your friends,
The Word Alive”
The band clarified earlier today that Holland is leaving the Word Alive on good terms—so much so that the band replied to fans' comments on their Facebook post with the announcement, saying “We have no plans of slowing down. We love Luke, he's our brother and always will be. Couldn't be on better terms parting ways.”
They add,”TWA is a family, including all past and present members. It's never been about one guy, we support each other in life before business.”

The Word Alive released their latest album, Dark Matter, via Fearless Records in March. They're currently on the Overdose Tour (a fitting title), which Holland will finish before his exit at the end of this year to, as the band's statement puts it, “explore other musical endeavors and pursue passions outside of The Word Alive.”
“We’re continuing on, finishing the Dark Matter album cycle with some incredible tours all over the world in 2017. The Overdose Tour will feature our longest headlining set to date including songs we’ve never played live before, as well as some songs we haven’t played in years,” the band add about the tour.
