This cut 'Suicide Squad' clip shows another side of Jared Leto's Joker

In case you haven’t heard, Jared Leto is officially reprising his role as Joker for Zack Snyder‘s cut of Justice League. However, it looks like this may not be the only place we see Leto’s Joker return.

This week, director David Ayer teased that a recut of Suicide Squad might actually happen with an unseen clip of Leto as the DC villain.

Obviously, there’s been a lot of controversy surrounding Jared Leto’s portrayal of Joker in Suicide Squad. After Suicide Squad was recut post-filming, many of Leto’s scenes were removed from the movie. This led to speculation that film executives were not impressed by Leto’s performance. Despite the scrutiny, Leto previously stated that he would love to reprise the role.

Following this, a Joker spinoff film starring Leto was rumored to be in the works in 2018. However, the film never got off the ground. Soon after, Todd Phillips‘ dark adaptation of Joker’s story starring Joaquin Phoenix was released. This led to a number of reports stating that Leto felt “alienated and upset” about Phillips’ film and felt he had been strung along by Warner Brothers Studios in regards to his role as Joker.

Then, back in April 2020, David Ayer revealed that the removal of Leto’s scenes had nothing to do with his performance. In fact, much of his “magnificent work” still remains unseen. Shortly after his comments, Ayer released an alternative Joker ending in Suicide Squad that the internet had a lot of thoughts about.

As well, in December 2020, the director even said that the cut footage of Leto would change a lot of fans’ opinions on Joker. Due to his continuous praise towards Leto, a lot of fans are asking Ayer to release his own cut of Suicide Squad.

Now, it looks like Ayer is teasing that an “Ayer Cut” of Suicide Squad may actually happen. This week, the director released, on his Instagram story, an unseen clip of Leto’s Joker that shows a whole new side to the villain. In the clip, viewers can see the Joker’s burned face from that helicopter crash while he says, “you should be ashamed of yourself.”

For now, fans can expect to see Leto’s return as Joker in Snyder’s cut of Justice League. For those that are still unaware, Snyder is releasing his own cut of Justice League on HBO Max later this year. Back in 2016, he had nearly completed his work on the original film before stepping away due to a family tragedy.

Warner Bros. then brought in Joss Whedon to finish the project. Whedon took what Snyder had, did reshoots and editing and ended up releasing a film that many found underwhelming. Following the film’s debut, fans began calling for the “Snyder Cut.” Finally, the project was officially announced on May 20, 2020.

The Snyder Cut of Justice League, which will be a four-hour film, will include plenty of new footage and possibly even a few fan theories. In October 2020, rumors emerged that Leto is reprising his role as Joker for the project. Leto reportedly signed on for various reshoots that are currently underway.

Now, Leto has officially confirmed he is back as Joker and is giving fans the scoop on what they can expect. During a recent interview with Jake’s Takes, the actor praised Snyder and what he is doing with this new project.

“Well, Zack Snyder, he’s a warrior, he’s a madman,” he says. “I really love him. With every character I play, I don’t know if it’s because I work so intently and I tend to dig really deep and put a lot of time and energy into it, but when I’m done playing the part, I do miss them a little bit… So it’s nice to revisit things.”

Along with this, Leto also talked about the preparation that went into both Suicide Squad and his upcoming HBO Max film The Little Things.

“Parts like the Joker, like Sparma, what’s really great about those roles is yeah, they can be intense and dark, but there’s a lot of freedom and abandon there,” he continues. “And that’s truly fun for me, it’s fun for the other actors, it’s fun for the crew. And with both of those roles, there was lots of laughter on the set and a lot of joy because you would improvise and say something really funny. So it’s always a lot of fun when you can hear cracking up on the other side of the camera, and I like that quite a bit.”

As for The Suicide Squad, the new film is still arriving sometime this year. Late last year, Warner Bros. confirmed that all of its 2021 films are simultaneously getting released in theaters and on HBO Max. This is due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that has heavily impacted the film industry.
