The company that owns TikTok is apparently working on building its own kind of smartphone to compete with iPhones and Androids.
The report states that CEO Shang Yiming has “long dreamt” of creating a phone full of apps such as the proposed model. However, the report is limited — it has no information about the design or intended market of the phone. It does suggest that U.S. sales could be an issue due to the current political climate between the U.S. and China.
Byte also reportedly confirmed a deal with Smartisan, a phone making company, earlier this year and claimed it acquired a patent portfolio.
The Financial Times seems to be skeptical about the probability of success for the phone.
TikTok has become a global phenomenon. In case you’re not familiar, the app is a social media platform where people can make short videos. It’s almost like Vine (R.I.P.), but it seems most of its users make their videos lip syncing to their favorite songs or audio clips. Songs range from Top 40 hits to viral sensations, but users have also totally nailed some of our scene favorites.
We have little else to report on TikTok, except that you can check out these 11 Times that the app captured the scene.
Other smartphone news
The new iPhone might make listening to songs with friends easier than having to split a pair of headphones.
According to a new report by Japanese blog Mac Otakara, the new iPhone will let the device send Bluetooth audio to two different devices.
This could be used in a lot of ways — listening to songs through two pairs of wireless headphones or blasting music over two different Bluetooth speakers. From a non-musical point of view, it could be used to send GPS directions to a car’s audio system while also using headphones at the same time.
This technology is already used in Samsung phones with the “Dual Audio” feature.
It’s unclear if this new audio system will only be available for new phones, or if the existing iPhones can get an upgrade. We’ll have to wait to hear more information and when we can start jamming out with our friends using two different sets of AirPods.
