Tom DeLonge opens up on “where blink-182 should’ve gone” sonically

In a recent interview with ALT 98.7, Angels & Airwaves frontman and former blink-182 guitarist Tom DeLonge discussed his creative vision behind the upcoming AVA album.

During the Q&A, DeLonge described that their new album will expand on their post-punk influences with a wide, stadium-rock feel. In addition to that, he revealed that the band’s new musical direction resembles how blink-182 should’ve sounded like—something he’s opened up on before.

“I said a while ago that the new Angels & Airwaves record would sound a bit like what I envisioned Blink would sound like in the future,” DeLonge says. “What I mean by that is more modernizing the way you write punk music. The way you bring in electronic elements, the way you bring in synthesizers, the way you build and craft the songs to where they’re a bit more complex, there’s landscapes involved and there’s crescendos—there’s things that create dynamics.”

DeLonge goes further to explain his songwriting process and writing punk music, in the context of Angels & Airwaves.

“A lot of punk-rock music is we start this way, we end this way and it’s very one-sound, one-tone, whereas Angels & Airwaves ramps you up, explodes, drops you down, then ramps you back up and then something big at the end. It’s a different architecture altogether,” he elaborates.

“I always envisioned Blink would do a bit of that,” he continues. “We did some of that on the Neighborhoods record. ‘Ghost on the Dance Floor’ is the way that last Blink record started; it’s the first song. I thought that was a good example of where Blink should’ve gone.”

Earlier this month, DeLonge posted photos on his Instagram and teased fans with a possibility of a new Angels & Airwaves song. The band also recently dropped their first single, “Rebel Girl,” via Rise Records in April.
