Golden Globes launches first meme of 2020 with Tom Hanks’ reaction

The 77th Golden Globe Awards were presented last night. Joaquin Phoenix took one home for his performance in Joker, Brad Pitt snagged one for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. But it was Tom Hanks that really stole the show and unknowingly created the first meme-worthy moment of 2020.

During host Ricky Gervais’s scathing opening monologue, the camera cut to Tom Hanks in the audience and his face immediately went viral.

Gervais’s monologue was an unfiltered shellacking of hypocritical celebrities and those in the attendance. Gervais at one point told them to “Fuck off.” Most in attendance seemed uncomfortable, that was known when the camera cut away from Gervais to show their reactions. That is when America’s sweetheart Tom Hanks launched a new meme.

Hanks’s face during the monologue pretty much summed up the first five days of 2020. Watch the original clip of Gervais’s speech and check it out with all of the glorious memes below.

Overall, Hanks’s face pretty much captures the tone of 2020 so far. It hasn’t been a great start to the year with devastating brush fires in Australia and a potential World War 3 with Iran.

Tom did not win the award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, but he did take home the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. He also launched the first viral meme trend of 2020.
