Tom Holland went back to high school undercover to prep for ‘Spider-Man’

Spider-Man: Far From Home star Tom Holland has opened up about preparing for his big role, which apparently includes going under-cover at a real-life high school.

Holland opened up to Entertainment Weekly about the film, the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general and his co-stars.

He started off by talking about how he feels going into his second Spider-Man movie.

“It’s a much easier turn-around because I’m doing my second film together with Jon Watts, George Cottle the stunt coordinator, all the people who pretty much were on the first film — so it more feels like we’re making a massive TV show than it is a film, because this just feels like the second episode, sort of a university reunion,” he said.

Then, he discussed where the film will pick up — the last day of school right before summer vacation.

“Peter and his friends are going on a summer vacation to Europe and it is time for Peter Parker to sort of hang up the Spider-Man suit and take a break,” Holland said. “He’s very tired from recent events that have been going on in the MCU, as I’m sure you’re aware, and he basically just wants to go on vacation and that vacation is hijacked by Nick Fury and it basically all goes terribly wrong.”

Later, he discusses how his character is an American teen who is headed international in this film, and how he prepared for that.

“I actually went to a New York City school sort of undercover as a research experiment for the film, and when I came out he said “What was it like?” and I said “Firstly, I’m thick as shit and I had no idea what they were talking about [laughs] and, secondly, it is so unbelievably diverse, especially in Queens and Brooklyn and the Bronx and stuff, and I think he did a really good job of making the environment authentic throughout the first film and this one,” Holland said.

He also said he loves playing the character and would keep playing him for as long as Marvel wants him to.

“I’ll do 26 of these if they ask me. I love doing it … I get to travel the world, I get to play a character that I’ve grown up loving my whole life. (Also) I get to work with people in the industry who I consider to be the best,” he said.

“And you know, it’s a film that’s fun — it’s light-hearted, it’s full of action, which I love doing, it’s funny, it’s dramatic, it sort of ticks every box for me,” he continued.

More Spider-Man news

Last year’s smash hit Spiderman: Into The Spider Verse saw just about every version of Spiderman show up, except for Tom Holland‘s

The actor, who is the latest to take on the role of the beloved superhero in Avengers: Endgame and Far From Home, was supposed to make an appearance that was eventually cut.

Holland recently shared the news with U.K. publication JOE saying he was “heartbroken” it wasn’t included.

“Yeah, there was going to be another Peter Parker. It was a scene in a train station or something and it was going to be like an Easter egg. I was gonna walk through the background and say like, ‘Hey, kid!’ or something. Never happened. Heartbroken.”

The current Spiderman actor wasn’t the only real-life spidey who was supposed to appear. Apparently, at various times it was also discussed that past stars Andrew Garfield and Tobey McGuire would also lend their voices.

“I don’t want to get into it, but I did write that [scene with all three],” co-director Rodney Rothman told The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith earlier this year. “But there’s a lot of anxiety, there’s a lot of anxiety around the movie generally and there was anxiety about confusing people.”

While the film was fantastic anyways, we can’t deny how cool it would have been to get all three Spiderman actors in the same scene together.
