Both Morello and Tankian are among the artists featured on The Problem of Leisure: A Celebration of Andy Gill and Gang of Four. Together, the rock musicians are taking on the Gang Of Four classic “Natural’s Not In It.”
Back in February 2020, Gang Of Four’s guitarist Andy Gill passed away at the age of 64. To help honor Gill, various artists are coming together for The Problem of Leisure: A Celebration of Andy Gill and Gang of Four. The tribute album is set to be released in May and features covers of Gang Of Four and Andy Gill songs.
Now, fans are getting a taste of what they can expect from the tribute album. Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello and System Of A Down’s Serj Tankian have covered the Gang Of Four classic “Natural’s Not In It” for the tribute LP.
The track first appeared on Gang Of Four’s 1979 debut LP Entertainment!. For the cover, Morello and Tankian are giving the classic a new rock edge full of sounds Rage Against The Machine and System Of A Down listeners will recognize.
“Andy Gill was one of a handful of artists in history who changed the way guitars are played,” Morello says. “His band Gang of Four were just incendiary. And completely groundbreaking with Andy’s confrontational, unnerving and sublime playing at the forefront. His jagged plague-disco raptor-attack industrial-funk deconstructed guitar anti-hero sonics and fierce poetic radical intellect were hugely influential to me.”
For Tankian, he greatly enjoyed being part of this special project and getting to work with Morello again.
“It was a real pleasure to work on this track with Tom,” Tankian says. “And honor the legacy of Andy and Gang of Four at the same time.”
The full list of artists and covers featured on the Andy Gill tribute album arrives on Jan. 14. The LP, which debuts in May, will be released in various formats including vinyl, CD and cassette. The Problem of Leisure: A Celebration of Andy Gill and Gang of Four is available to pre-order here.
