According to Google, Hurricane Irma—the Atlantic hurricane that developed in August and made landfall in Florida this September—sits at the No. 1 spot for Google searches both Stateside and globally this year. For U.S. searches, disgraced newsman Matt Lauer and late rocker Tom Petty land at the No. 2 and 3 positions, respectively. Of course, huge sporting events like the Super Bowl and August's Mayweather-McGregor fight made the domestic list, and right at the No. 10 position is 2017's favorite toy, the fidget spinner.

It's interesting to see what different Google searches were popular across different territories. As reported by the NME, actress and British royal-to-be Meghan Markle was the top search in the U.K., followed by the iPhone 8. Worldwide, both the iPhone 8 and new iPhone X were the two most-searched terms right after Hurricane Irma. Linkin Park vocalist Chester Bennington, who unexpectedly died in July, came in at No. 9 on Google's top global search terms. Do you think these Google searches capture the zeitgeist of 2017?
