Since the release of Toy Story in 1995, there’s been an ongoing debate within the franchise’s fanbase. Can the toys in the films die?

Following the traumatizing incinerator scene in 2010’s Toy Story 3, many started to wonder again if the films’ toys are forever immortal. Now, director Lee Unkrich is finally settling this debate.

It’s been a decade since Toy Story 3 was released. However, many still wonder what would have happened to the beloved characters if they hadn’t been saved from the incinerator by the Claw-loving aliens. Would the toys be lost forever? Would their souls be reincarnated into future toys? Are they immortal or can they die?

Toy Story 3‘s director is finally settling this debate that has spanned decades. Over the weekend, a Twitter user tweeted Unkrich, asking the director to settle the debate once and for all.

“My girlfriend and I are having a big fight bc I think the toys from Toy Story are immortal and she thinks they can die,” Twitter user @markydoodoo says.

The tweet eventually caught the attention of Unkrich who revealed the truth behind the toys’ mortality.

“They live as long as they exist. But if they were to be utterly destroyed? Say, in an incinerator? Game over,” he says.

So, in theory, the toys in Toy Story are able to live forever. However, if they are destroyed in any way, they are gone for good. Fortunately enough, Toy Story 3‘s anxiety-inducing incinerator scene didn’t lead to the deaths of the franchise’s most beloved characters.

The sudden twist of fate for the toys eventually led to Toy Story 4, one of the franchise’s most successful films to date. Following its release in 2019, the film became the fifth Disney movie to earn over $1 billion.
