Before starting his rap and hip hop career, Trippie Redd, whose real name is Michael Lamar White IV, recorded alternative rock music. According to a Rolling Stone article in 2017, the rapper cites rock groups including Nirvana and KISS as his inspirations.

For Trippie Redd, music, regardless of genre, has helped with his mental health struggles over the years.

“I was depressed,” he says in the Rolling Stone article. “I didn’t have nobody [and] was on my own type shit. Music took me from a real dark place to a real bright one.”

Now, Trippie Redd is returning to his rock roots with his latest song “Dreamer.” Led by guitar, the song offers a look into the rapper’s rock inspirations while also showing his versatility as an artist.

Produced by Yeezo, Trippie Redd released the new song in celebration of his 21st birthday. Since its release, “Dreamer” reportedly shot up to the top spot on Apple Music‘s Rock Song Chart alongside the Eagles and AC/DC.

The rapper took to social media to share the accomplishment. He also reveals that more rock-influenced music is on the way with a new song potentially called “NEON SHARK.”
