Tumblr has returned to Apple App store following adult content ban

Back in November, it was reported that Tumblr had been removed from Apple’s App store following concerns that child pornography had made its way onto the platform.

Following the app’s removal, Tumblr announced that it would be banning all adult content from the site, and today, it was announced that the app would be available to download again.

According to Techcrunch, Tumblr has made its appearance back on the iOS app store, but with a catch. According to the report, a new version history has noted that:

“this particular update[…]includes changes to Tumblr’s Community Guidelines, which prohibit certain kinds of content from being shown on Tumblr.”

Of course, this newfound version doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone.

On Dec. 3, it was reported that the app would be banning all adult content from the platform, which they define as all “photos, videos or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content—including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts.”

The official date for the forthcoming change is Dec. 17, and as of right now, they have already begun flagging content that they feel is “adult,” via their algorithm, which has lead to some interesting mishaps.

Take for example:

Tumblr CEO Jeff D’Onofrio recently shared a statement regarding the new ban on adult content.

So, as of right now, any content that visually depicts sexual acts and/or nudity is now banned, but written content and media depicting breastfeeding and nudity will still be permitted on the site.

Tumblr users can read the new community guidelines in full here.

While big things are changing for the app, D’Onofrio shared in his statement that he and the rest of Tumblr will continue trying to make Tumblr unique from other platforms, regardless of the adult ban:

“We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality and your personal journey,” D’Onofrio writes. “We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance.”
