twenty one pilots treated fans to an AMA today and it was pretty great. Vocalist Tyler Joseph and drummer Josh Dun delved into the story of Trench, shared favorite songs and, of course, made way too many jokes.

Here’s what we learned from their time answering questions on reddit:

Some more insight on the album’s concept and story

User Catey98 noticed TOP borrowed concepts from Zoroastrianism and the Bourbaki Group to created the Trench world. “What drove you to use these concepts and would you mind speaking more on what ways they inspired the concept? Were there any other things you found inspiration in while building the story?” they asked.

“The concept of a dying religion is sad and intriguing, and the reason it was dying was something they could never control: The lack of the vultures needed to carry out their theology. Something so natural and logical can get in the way of your religion,” the band explained.

More specifically on the Bourbaki Group, twenty one pilots explained they “named themselves after Nico” and that the story of Dema happened before them.

The duo also explained that Sahlo Folina is “what we cry out in TRENCH when we are in need.”

Additionaly, the band emphasized how fans are also responsible for creating Trench.

“The existence of Clancy was born out of an absence in this story that you all had inspired,” they shared.

On choosing the producer for Trench

User its-full-of-stars noted twenty one pilots worked with five producers on Blurryface, but only one on Trench.

“I had an instinct that’s hard to describe that I knew I wanted to produce this album myself. Paul [Meany] acted as the perfect co-driver to take it over the finish line,” Joseph explained. “I loved the producers we’ve worked with in the past and wanted to take what I learned and apply it.”

First, last and favorite songs off Trench

“Nico and the Niners” was the first song the band finished. Meanwhile, Joseph couldn’t choose just one song was the hardest to write, picking four: “Bandito,” “Morph,” “The Hype,” and “Chlorine.”

“I was working on “Bandito” while on the Blurryface tour. The opening riff of “Morph” and the production on “The Hype” took everything out of me,” the frontman explained. “Wrestling on trying to tackle what I was feeling in “Chlorine” was exhausting.”

Plus, they shared their favorite songs off the album. Joseph’s is “Cut My Lip” (today) and Dun’s is levitate.

Obviously, not all the questions (or answers) were serious

When TheShadyRelapse asked if fans would ever be able to buy physical copies of the band’s self-titled album again, Joseph had the perfect answer.

“Definitely wouldn’t rule it out but it’s not in our near future plans,” the singer wrote. “I have a hard copy myself that I’m looking to sell to make a bunch of money some day but if some were made that value would drop significantly.”

On that note, the answer to legomaster_v2’s question, “How much yellow tape have you guys gone through?” is…

“We are thinking about re-issuing a bunch of hard copies of the self-titled record to pay for all of the rolls we have already gone through. It’s a lot,” according to Dun.

Plus, the story of how Joseph and Dun met also got a new twist.

“Seasoned musician Josh Dun discovers — and falls in love with — struggling artist Tyler. He has just about given up on his dream to make it big as a singer until Josh coaxes him into the spotlight. But even as Tyler’s career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Josh fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons.”

Sure, sounds true, and weirdly similar to the plot of A Star Is Born.

There was also a bit of crying

User sammiethetiger said fans “purchased and gifted over 150 copies of Trench for fellow fans around the world who otherwise couldn’t afford or get access to it.”

“Jeeze guys put your wands away with that alohomora charm on our tear ducts,” the band replied.

A very important question

“Will you say ‘Josh Dun’ in a song in every album from now on?” Asked user conormangan.

“Every album I give Josh one opportunity to write lyrics and that’s what he comes up with,” Joseph revealed.
…and a setlist hint?
While answering a question about their favorite song on the band’s self-titled record, they might have let slip that there’s a song from the album on the tour’s setlist. YES.

“Taxi Cab is on the setlist, what?” They revealed. What, indeed.
