twenty one pilots' 'Trench' helped boost cassette sales in 2018

twenty one pilotsTrench is among the top-selling cassettes of 2018, alongside the Stranger Things soundtrack and Britney Spears’ …Baby, One More Time.

The great numbers from the albums helped boost cassette sales in the U.S. last year, proving the format’s popularity keeps growing.

A Nielsen Music report shows cassette album sales grew 23 percent from 2017 to 2018. Only last year, 219,000 copies were sold in the U.S., per Billboard.

The top 10 best selling tapes make up for 69,000 of those copies and include Britney Spears’ debut album on number 5 and the Stranger Things soundtrack on number 4.

twenty one pilots’ Trench came in third, with 7,000 copies sold from its October release date until Jan. 3, 2019.

Volumes one and two from the Guardians of the Galaxy movie soundtrack occupied first and second place, selling 24,000 and 19,000 copies, respectively.

Guns N’ Roses reissue of Appetite for Destruction, Metallica’s reissue of The $5.98 EP: Garage Days Re-Revisited also ended up on the top 10.

Billboard also notes that 28 albums sold at least 1,000 copies on cassette tapes in 2018, 11 more than in the year prior and three more than in 2016.

The rebirth of cassettes

Although the numbers are impressive, the growing popularity of cassettes isn’t new. The once extremely popular medium has seen a rebirth in the past few years, alongside vinyl.

According to a recent report from BuzzAngle, vinyl sales grew from 8.6 million to 9.7 million while cassette sales jumped from 99,400 to 118,200 sold.

Surprisingly, the increase in sales for these older formats is due in large part to sales of older albums, with 52.5 percent of cassettes sold being over three years old.

However, as the Nielsen report indicates, new albums, or old album reissues, have been getting a love of love, as well.
