twenty one pilots tease new character in a post-Blurryface world

It looks like twenty one pilots’ Blurryface saga is finally drawing to a close.

During an interview with NME, singer Tyler Joseph divulged a few details about the character’s potential “end-game” and conclusion to the story that’s played out since the group’s 2015 album.

“There’s definitely an end-game,” Joseph says. “There’s a story. I think I was very specific that there’s a reason why the record ends with [the song] ‘Leave The City‘ and the song itself is a kind of cliff-hanger. I mean, the whole thing was it’s setting up for what’s next and it’d be silly to not at least resolve what we’ve already started.”

But when one door closes, another opens, as evidenced in Joseph’s casual mention of “another character” that’s coming with the next album following 2018’s Trench.

Joseph and drummer Josh Dun are already hard at work on putting the next album together. Speaking to NME in an older interview, the duo spoke on how a good portion of Trench was written in Joseph’s basement in Columbus, Ohio. The upcoming LP will be the opposite, as they’ve written much of the new album while out on tour.

But even when the new character is finally introduced to the world, don’t get your hopes up that they’ll be part of some “crazy narrative,” Dun says.

“There will always probably be elements of us that peek out as well, and maybe that would even be a whole record in between the ones explaining the narrative — maybe, maybe not,” he elaborated. Will we be seeing glimpses in the character when the next album does come around? We can’t say for sure, unfortunately, but the idea of a continuing saga past Blurryface certainly sounds intriguing.

Can’t wait for that new album to drop? You can see the band on the Bandito tour in Europe now and the U.S. this summer. You can check out the dates below and grab tickets here.
