twenty one pilots release "Saturday" ahead of 'Scaled And Icy'—watch

twenty one pilots have been keeping busy during the pandemic. The band just dropped “Saturday,”  their third track release from the upcoming album Scaled And Icy. 

The rest of the highly anticipated album arrives May 21, along with a special twenty one pilots – Livestream Experience performance. Following the release, the band will also perform at the Billboard Music Awards May 23.

twenty one pilots announced the release of “Saturday” on their Twitter, playfully writing, “happy tuesday. here is Saturday. see you friday.” They also linked to a playlist where fans can watch the official lyric video on YouTube.

“Saturday” follows the release of  “Shy Away” and “Choker.”

“Shy Away” is Scaled And Icy’s lead single. It currently sits at No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart for the fourth consecutive week and is accompanied by a music video.

Additionally, “Choker” came with a music video directed by Mark Eshleman for Reel Bear Media. It was shot at a vintage toy shop in downtown Columbus, Ohio, where the two grew up.

Scaled And Icy is the product of long-distance virtual sessions. The album has largely been produced by Tyler Joseph in his home studio over the course of the past year in quarantine, while Josh Dun engineered the album’s drums from across the country. 

Joseph told Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe about the pros and cons of working remotely in an interview on May 18.

“I think on the pro side, I think we actually developed some rhythm and chemistry on using remote technology in a way that we might always use it in future,” Joseph said. “[Dun] actually moved back to Ohio, which is pretty exciting for me, so the band’s back together.There’s a lot of amazing things that we were able to do remotely, but man it does take longer. It just does.”

Their first studio album in three years, Scaled And Icy focuses on the feelings associated with a global pandemic upending their normal routines — anxiety, loneliness, boredom and doubt.

Joseph also spoke with Zane about the future of twenty one pilots. 

“One more record,” Joseph said. “There’ll be an explanation and a bookend and then we can start talking about where does that want to live now? I think one more record when it comes to the story that I’ve been telling for all these records. And then after that, I think then truly, maybe moving on to another story or something.”

“No one wants to listen to, or watch or read a story that doesn’t end.”

“Saturday” is now available on all streaming platforms. Fans can also pre-save Scaled And Icy on a variety of platforms, including a special edition box set of Scaled And Icy that is limited to 35 thousand copies worldwide.

The limited edition box set will be released on May 21 and includes a CD, stickers, enamel pins, a bandana, embroidered patches, postcards and a toy dragon.

More on the twenty one pilots – Livestream Experience 

twenty one pilots will host their first global streaming event on Friday at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT. The event will feature the live debut of new material from Scaled And Icy, as well as a setlist of songs spanning twenty one pilots’ catalog.

The twenty one pilots -Livestream Experience will be hosted on Maestro’s livestream platform and is sponsored by Chipotle and Hot Topic. Tickets are on sale now on a special, interactive live twenty one pilots website.
