twenty one pilots’ ‘Trench’ didn’t get a Grammy nomination, here’s why
The 61st Annual Grammy Awards released their list of nominations this morning. While twenty one pilots, Fall Out Boy, Fever 333, Underoath, Bring Me The Horizon, Halestorm, Post Malone and many more in our scene were nominated, many noticed that one album seemed to be missing.
twenty one pilots were nominated in one category this year as “Jumpsuit” is up for Best Rock Song. However, many wondered why the duo’s latest full-length Trench isn’t up for any category.

The answer is actually quite simple. This year’s eligibility period ran from Oct. 1, 2017 to Sept. 30, 2018.
“Jumpsuit” ended the hiatus July 11, making it eligible for nomination. “Nico And The Niners,” “Levitate” and “My Blood” were also eligible based on their release dates. However, Trench dropped Oct. 5, 2018, five days after the cutoff, so it wasn’t eligible.
On the plus side, the band’s album will be eligible for consideration for the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards that will air in 2020.

TOP were first nominated at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, which aired in 2017. “Stressed Out” was nominated for Record Of The Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance while “Heathens” was nominated for Best Rock Performance.
The duo won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, making good on the promise they would accept the award in their underwear if they ever won a Grammy.
twenty one pilots weren’t the only ones ineligible for certain Grammy Awards
Back in October, we learned Post Malone was disqualified from the nominations for Best New Artist at this year’s Grammy Awards after some reportedly intense discussion within the Recording Academy. Cardi B is also ineligible for the award.
But why, exactly? Well, as reported by Pitchfork, disqualifying factors for Posty include the fact that his massive success was launched nearly two years ago with his 2016 debut, Stoney.
The Recording Academy’s decision was first whispered about over at HITS Daily Double, the blog speculating that the moving Grammy goalposts were the result of a “heated battle on the screening committee.”
And those moving goalposts seem all too real. Especially when one considers last year’s New Artist winner, Alessia Cara, released her first hit in 2015. Indeed, that’s the same year Malone burst on the scene with “White Iverson.”
Cardi B’s likewise disqualified for previous success. She was up for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance last year, but both went to Kendrick Lamar. She was also submitted for 2018 Best New Artist but didn’t make the actual noms.
