Twin XL step into the mind of an introvert with their latest single “Friends.” Comprising former members of the Summer Set, brothers John and Stephen Gomez, and Cameron Walker-Wright of Nekokat, this is the band’s third single taken off their upcoming debut EP How To Talk To Strangers.
Featuring choreography from Kayla Kalbfleisch, the band dance with a life-sized teddy bear and impassive expressions on their faces despite the danceable music and catchy hooks.
The group wanted to produce something that sounded whimsical but still had a deeper meaning.
“We really wanted to find that happy balance between writing a catchy pop song that still had a lot of depth lyrically and also had a dark, sonic undertone,” they say. “The lyrics in the first verse talk about our desire for isolation and the internal conflict of an introvert.”
Regardless of the lyrics that emphasize wanting to be alone, the trio still express a need to be among others.
“As the story progresses, we find sanctuary in the presence of strangers in strange rooms completely outside our comfort zone,” the band say. “Here, we are free of judgment, and we are free to be whoever we want.”
The trio released two singles last year, “Sunglasses” and “Good,” which will also be on the forthcoming EP to be released March 1.
