Twitter is down, adding to the growing list of summer outages—UPDATED

UPDATE: JULY 11, 2019 4:21 P.M. EST

Twitter is officially coming back online following an outage lasting about an hour earlier today.

The social media platform shared an update on their status webpage explaining the reason behind the problem.

“The outage was due to an internal configuration change, which we’re now fixing. Some people may be able to access Twitter again and we’re working to make sure Twitter is available to everyone as quickly as possible,” the update reads.

Although their support account hasn’t shared any updates, the platform seemed to keep a sense of humor about the situation.

Social Media platforms have been having a rough summer, and now the one place to go and complain about your chosen platform being down, Twitter, is having issues.

According to downdetector.com, users began noticing issues with the platform at 2:46 p.m. EST today. At the time of this article, people worldwide are having trouble accessing their Twitter accounts.

This has been far from the first incident for Twitter and other platforms this summer. Most recently, the short-form social media service was having difficulties with its direct messaging feature.

Twitter’s status page confirms that the site is still down, but that they are aware of the issue.

“We are currently investigating issues people are having accessing Twitter. We will keep you updated on whats happening,” the most recent update reads.

On July 3, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp users reported problems connecting, as well as the issues with Twitter DMs.

Reddit was also reportedly having issues this morning, continuing the trend of multiple platforms having problems back-to-back.

According to downdetector, users on the east and west coasts of the U.S. are being heavily affected. The U.K. and Japan are also experiencing heavy outages, while other locations worldwide are being affected to a lesser extent.

According to Newsweek, Twitter let out a statement acknowledging the outage.

“Thanks for noticing–we’re going to fix it up and have things back to normal soon,” the Twitter website said.

While Twitter notified users shortly after reports of their DM issues began, they haven’t been able to post updates via their support account due to obvious reasons.

Twitter has not posted updates on their Facebook or Instagram accounts at this point.

The latest string of outages follow a recurring trend of issues hitting social media over the past few weeks.

Instagram went down twice in June, while parent company Facebook and sister company WhatsApp were also experiencing issues very early into July.
