Twitter tests new feature to inform users of morning news

Twitter is testing a new feature to help users be caught up to date on daily news.

The update is currently being tested in the company’s Android app. It places news stories at the top of a Twitter user’s timeline with a prompt suggesting them to catch up on what happened when they weren’t online.

Twitter has not clarified how long someone has to be off the app for the morning news feature to appear.

In a statement to Mashable, Twitter product manager Wally Gurzynski explained the reason behind the launch of the feature.

“People come to Twitter every day to catch up on what’s happening and all the surrounding conversation,” Gurzynski said. “With this update, we’re making it easier for people to see the news and stories their followers have been discussing while they’ve been away – right at the top of their timeline.”

This feature differs from the current “while you were away” function because it focuses more on news stories rather than just popular tweets.

It hasn’t been announced whether or not the feature will be permanent.

In addition to this feature, Twitter recently rolled out a new “original tweeter” function. The point of it is to clearly show who initiated a thread in the replies.

With all of these new features, Twitter recently announced they were looking for 1,000 users to act as “guinea pigs” for new functions on the platform. Those people will test out features and updates and engage in conversation about the platform.
