Twitter is testing out a reply option to help you avoid awkward discussions

Twitter is testing out several changes to how the social media platform is working with some hefty shakeups to who can reply to your posts.

According to a release from the company, they’re going to be allowing users to decide exactly who can reply to their tweets.

Previously, Twitter started allowing users to hide replies from select users if they choose to.

Now, they’re going a step further by allowing you to select who can reply before a post is even made.

There’s going to be three options for users to select from.

They can make posts available for everyone to reply to just like how every post worked before.

Users can also now limit replies to only people who they follow now though. Further, users can select an option for only people mentioned in a tweet to reply.

Twitter is marking posts using the latter two options as such so people can see when a tweet is set that way.

The reply icon is being greyed out but those who can’t reply can still retweet, like and retweet with comment.

As of now, only select people are being given the new options but they are likely to be making it widely available in the future.

“Being able to participate and understand what’s happening is key for useful public conversation. So, we’re exploring how we can improve these settings to give people more opportunities to weigh in while still giving people control over the conversations they start. In addition to this, we’re making it easier to read all conversations around a Tweet with a new layout for replies and more accessible Retweets with comments.

One thing we know for sure is that you’ll be creative with this update. Maybe you’ll host a debate on the benefits of pineapple on pizza (#TeamPineapple) with fellow pizza pals or invite a panel of distinguished guests for a fireside chat. You could even play a game of tic-tac-toe for people to follow along without messing up your moves. We’re excited to see what you do!” their post reads.
