Awsten Knight drives Waterparks on bizarre trip in “Dream Boy” video

Waterparks just dropped the video for Dream Boy,” the third single from their forthcoming album FANDOM, and it’s quite a lot to unpack.

Recently, Awsten Knight to explain the backstory of the song on Twitter and how it’s about fan expectations of him.

When the song first released, Knight shared a bit of information about his “favorite song” with fans.

“ORIGINALLY I JUST WANTED TO HAVE A SONG THAT WAS ONLY CHORUS AND BASICALLY STRUCTURE IT AS IF IT WERE A REMIX OF ANOTHER SONG WITH A MILLION SONIC VARIATIONS OF THE HOOK, BUT THAT IT WOULD JUST BE THE ORIGINAL VERSION BC I LOVE DANCE MUSIC TOO MUCH,” he wrote.

“BUT THEN I MADE 1 VERSE THAT REALLY DROVE HOME THE MEANING OF THE SONG AND HAD TO KEEP IT,” he continued. “WE CAN GET INTO MEANING LATER (EVEN THOUGH SOME OF YALL HAVE PROBABLY ALREADY FIGURED THAT OUT) BUT THAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND THE STRUCTURE FOR DREAM BOY.”

Then, he dove even deeper into the story of the track, and how it’s based on his own experience being a star.

“DREAM BOY IS ABOUT FAN EXPECTATIONS AND FEELING LIKE I’M CONSTANTLY BEING BUILT UP INTO SOMEONE/SOMETHING I CAN NEVER LIVE UP TO, WHICH WILL EVENTUALLY LEAD TO EVERYONE BEING DISAPPOINTED,” he wrote.

“AND THERE’S ABSOLUTELY PRESSURE BEHIND THAT; WHEN A LARGE GROUP OF PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT 5-10% OF YOU AND STILL PUSH THEIR UNSOLICITED IDEAS OF WHO YOU ARE ONTO YOUR CHARACTER, CHERRY PICKING WHAT THEY WANT TO SEE OR HOW THEY FEEL IRL AND (PROBABLY SUBCONSCIOUSLY) APPLY IT TO ME,” he continued. “AND IT ALMOST CREATES A KIND OF GUILT BEHIND BEHIND YOURSELF BECAUSE IN A WAY YOU’RE LETTING PEOPLE DOWN, EVEN THOUGH YOU KNOW IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT THEY BUILT YOU THIS WAY IN THEIR HEADS.”

Now, the band have dropped the full video for the track that’s complete with a talking hand, a flamethrower and a body bag. It was directed by Knight.

Knight is seen singing on the roof of a red car as it drives (thanks to a low-budget green screen) down the street with Geoff Wigington and Otto Wood driving. The whole thing just looks like some kind of distorted fever dream. You just will have to watch it yourself to try to understand what’s going on, and you can do that below.
