We Came As Romans are writing for their next album

We Came As Romans are currently out on the road for a massive co-headliner with Crown The Empire. The trek marks their second full run following the passing of vocalist Kyle Pavone in August.

Now, the band are revealing to Billboard that they have begun writing on the road in preparation for some studio time this summer.

Vocalist Dave Stephens shared that the band will more than likely be addressing Pavone’s passing in the upcoming new material, their followup to 2017’s Cold Like War.

“We’ve been throwing a few demos around,” Stephens tells Billboard. “I love that we’re going into the studio with so much to write about and something that hits home for all of us so hard. We’ve never had something so terrible happen, and I think it’s going to be therapeutic to write about it and be together and go through the whole process. I’m actually really looking forward to it.”

While the topic at hand is new for the band, the actual sound of the album will remain true to their past work

“Every record we make some kind of progression, so there’ll be a progression on this one, but I don’t think we’re going to do anything too drastic,” Stephen explains. “It’s still gonna sound like We Came As Romans.”

While they have been at work on new tunes, there’s also some material Pavone was writing prior to his passing that could make an appearance, according to Stephens.

“He was always writing, and I’m pretty sure he gave Lou [Cotton], our guitarist, a few different things he wrote,” he says. “We’re gonna try and get into his laptop, too, ‘cause I’m sure he had just files and files and files of stuff there, too. So that’s a goal. We would love to include him in this record as much as we can, aside from just writing about him.”

We Came As Romans on not replacing Kyle Pavone

We Came As Romans played their first show without Pavone Sept. 18 at The Pageant in St. Louis, Missouri. Soon after in November, Stephens announced that the band would be continuing on as a five-piece with no plan of adding a new member.

At the time, WCAR had just finished their first tour without Pavone as support for Bullet For My Valentine and a tribute show for the late vocalist, so Stephens told Kerrang that it’s time to take a much-deserved break to process their grief.

“I think as of now, we need some time to navigate our grief,” Stephens said. “We got the tour done and a lot of those firsts that were going to be really difficult out of the way. I guess the next first would be writing music without him, and I’m not sure when that will happen. We definitely plan on continuing on. Kyle and all of us dedicated so much time to making this happen because we all wanted it so [bad], and I know he would be pretty livid if we threw in the towel.”

The group is also holding to its stated intention to not replace Pavone. “There’s just no one who could replace him,” Stephens says. “I feel like if we added another singer it would feel like replacing him, whereas if it’s just me then I’m just covering his parts. It wouldn’t tear at our fan base or our hearts as much as seeing someone else up there singing those words and these songs.”

Following Pavone’s passing, which was later ruled an accidental overdose, the Kyle Pavone Foundation was launched. More information is available here.
