There were some mixed reviews with Weezer's last full-length album, Pacific Daydream, but that hasn't deterred the band from pushing out some new music.

Yesterday, the band revealed in an interview with an Australian radio station, Double J's Mornings with Zan Rowe, their plans of returning this spring with a brand new record.

Their new release will be The Black Album, an album that was actually intended to be the band's follow-up to 2016's The White Album. According to Rivers Cuomo, songs for Pacific Daydream “kind of materialized,” with songs quickly filling a folder on his Dropbox a lot quicker than songs for The Black Album

“We just weren’t quite ready [to release The Black Album] and this other album kind of materialized,” Cuomo says. “I had two folders on my Dropbox: One was The Black Album, and it didn’t get filled as quickly as this other folder, which I temporarily titled ‘New Folder.’ That one filled up with 10 songs that were definitely different, but not quite as different as The Black Album. So we put a name on it—Pacific Daydream—and put that out first.”

This isn't the first time Cuomo has talked about this upcoming project. In an interview he did with Dazed back in October, the frontman noted that this upcoming album will be darker and “a lot more modern and electronic and not-'90s sounding.”

Fast-forward to the interview Cuomo did with Zan Rowe, and he admitted that the upcoming release has been a challenge to write because he doesn't “gravitate toward super dark music.”

“There's always got to be something triumphant about it in the end. So, I've been struggling trying to figure out how I can do a Black Album as a writer,” Cuomo says.

While The Black Album has been a struggle to write, it hasn't slowed the band's plans of releasing the album later this spring.

According to Cuomo, the new album will be coming out May 25. You can hear the full interview here—talk of the newest album starts around 1:21:50. (Cuomo confirms the date of the new album around 1:44:30.)
