‘Wonder Woman’ producer explains why sequel date was pushed to 2020

A producer of the much-anticipated Wonder Woman sequel has explained why the film’s release date has been pushed back.

Back in November, it was revealed that Warner Bros. delayed the debut of Wonder Woman 1984.

Director Patty Jenkins’ sequel was set to hit theaters November 1, 2019. However, plans have changed and now the sequel has been pushed back to June 5, 2020.

At the time, Warner Bros. explained that the push made the film land “exactly where it belongs.”

“We had tremendous success releasing the first Wonder Woman film during the summer,” Warner Bros. explains. “So when we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changing competitive landscape, we did.”

Now, producer Steve Weintraub spoke to Collider to elaborate more about the move. Weintraub stated that the date was what the filmmakers wanted the entire time.

“The studio felt that until their slate for the year before came together—and they had an amazing end of 2018—that they needed to have a big what I call aircraft carrier, a “tentpole”, in [2019],” he explained. “We had a very rushed pre-production because Patty also did the TNT show and we had a very rushed post-production schedule in order to make the date that we were on, which was November 1, 2019.”

“We were doing it because the studio said they really needed it, and then at a certain point they came to us and they said, ‘You know what, you guys are right. Let’s go back to the month that you guys released Wonder Woman 1 in, and take the extra time,” he continued.

We can’t say we’re very patient about waiting for the sequel, but if it makes the movie even better, then we can wait.

At the time of the date change, Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot tweeted her excitement about the date change.

“Super excited to announce that, thanks to the changing landscape, we are able to put Wonder Woman back to its rightful home,” she writes. “June 5, 2020. Be there or be square!!!”
