Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson says he could have hosted the Oscars

The upcoming 91st Academy Awards will air without a host for the first time in 30 years this month. But that’s not stopping the would-be frontrunner for the hosting gig from revealing his absence is due to scheduling issues, it would seem.

Indeed, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson confirmed via Twitter Wednesday that he was the Academy’s “first choice to host this year.” Unfortunately, it looks like Johnson’s filming duties precluded him from participating in the Oscars ceremony.

“Ah mahalo dude,” Johnson greeted a fan before dropping an unexpected Oscars info bomb. “I was their first choice to host this year, and my goal was to make it the most fun and entertaining Oscars ever. We all tried hard, but couldn’t make it work since I’m shooting Jumanji. Academy and I were super bummed but maybe one day down the road.”

Naturally, the Jumani to which Johnson refers is the upcoming sequel to 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, which starred the wrestling icon as archaeologist and explorer Dr. Smolder Bravestone. (Welcome To The Jungle was itself a the sequel to Robin Williams‘ 1995 film Jumanji, the first Hollywood version of the 1981 children’s book.)

And while threading the needle between the winners of the 2019 Oscar nominations was likely a more “real possibility” than the avid mental health advocate landing a presidential nomination, we hope the Fighting With My Family producer remembers his Fall Out Boy and Disturbed alliances when a hosting call surely comes his way again in the future.

The Oscars airs live on ABC, Sunday, Feb. 24.
