According to PS4 lead system architect Mark Cerny, Sony is bringing 8K graphics, solid-state hard drives, and 3D audio. There will be backward compatibility with all current PlayStation 4 games. You wouldn’t have to hold onto your PS4 to play the rest of your games catalog.

The PS5 will include a variety of new and different hardware like an eight-core CPU based on AMD’s Ryzen line. It will also have a custom GPU built on AMD’s Radeon Navi. This means the console will be able to support a powerful graphical bump called ray-tracing.

In October, the company has unveiled more details outside of the hardware about the console, including that it will drop during the holiday season of 2020.

“Since we originally unveiled our next-generation console in April, we know that there’s been a lot of excitement and interest in hearing more about what the future of games will bring,” PlayStation President and CEO Jim Ryan posted on the company website. “Today I’m proud to share that our next-generation console will be called PlayStation 5, and we’ll be launching in time for Holiday 2020.”
