Rare demo tape from Kurt Cobain's pre-Nirvana band surfaces online

Before Kurt Cobain formed Nirvana, he fronted a band called Fecal Matter. The group, which also consisted of future Melvins drummer Dale Crover on bass, only released one demo throughout their time together, titled Illiteracy Will Prevail. (Kurt had just dropped out of high school at the time.)

Contrary to what some may surmise, the effort doesn’t have much of a crust-punk feel at all. It’s more-so simply down-tuned, sloppy, abrasive punk. While the track listing is continually being debated, it has been confirmed that the “Downer” seen below is an early version of the one found on Nirvana’s debut LP, Bleach
