Black Dice - REPO

Repo

Black Dice's track record could be distracting. A group that used to incorporate noise into their hardcore lost their song structure when they lost their rhythm section. Playing like dub music channeled through SETI transmissions, REPO is seemingly devoid of any organic instruments. Or rhythms. Or melodies. Instead, Black Dice present a wide array of ambient sonic blips and beeps with the occasional backbeat graciously thrown in to pull back listeners from their psychedelic trip through REPO's far-past shoegaze drone. After a few listens, however, the album starts to take shape, and the semblance of cohesion peeks through. Teetering between genius and madness, REPO is a few hooks short of a successful fishing trip for experimental music, left mostly with "experimental" and not much in the way of traditionally defined "music."
