The Antiphon

[3.5/5]

Don’t know if anyone could have seen this coming: Straight out of the mouths of Bomb The Music Industry!’s Jeff Rosenstock and We Versus The Shark’s Jeff Tobias, this is… Dance music? Maybe it’s not entirely surprising when you consider the intense musical output of Athens, Georgia (well documented by Rosenstock’s own Quote Unquote Records, a donation-based online label), and the breadth of influences demonstrated by Rosenstock and Tobias’ divergent grocery list of musical projects. Joined by co-conspirators Joel Hatstat and Mark Dale, The Antiphon is a weird, banging, catchy-as-hell tribute to those things most loved by beard punks everywhere: Bikes, coffee and books. You won’t hear a song this year that’s more likely to make you want to do stuff than “Marathon Mansion,” an ecstatic tribute to the pillars of punk existence, sung with all the fervor of old Against Me! but backed by some awesomely mutant piano-driven dance-punk. “Walking Life” kicks in with insane Daft Punk vocorder action before melding into some kind of Small Brown Bike/Beastie Boys hybrid. There’s some ill-advised rapping (yes, rapping) from time to time, but mostly, this is totally original, totally bizarre and totally fucking rad. (ERNEST JENNING RECORD CO) Sam Sutherland
