Hours And Hours: A Tribute To Seaweed

[3/5]

Tribute compilations are bitch goddesses who give with one hand and take with the other. For every cover that reminds the listener of how great the original was, many more drag a perfectly good song through the mud of “artistic interpretation.” Hours And Hours, a tribute to the recently reunited Tacoma, Washington, punk powerhouse Seaweed, has its share of both. While Ryan Mills (Kover), Rob Avery (formerly of Boy Sets Fire) and Favez hit the sweet spot with fairly straightforward covers of “Start With,” “Losing Skin” and “Free Drug Zone” respectively, the best cuts are where the artists reinterpret Seaweed’s vision. The Company We Keep (aka Brian Southall of the Receiving End Of Sirens and Kenny Bridges of Moneen) get ambient on their interpretation of “Steadfast Shrine,” while the Action Design steal the show with a sweet take on “Kid Candy.” However, more aggressive stabs at “Clean Slate” (Nora) and “Baggage” (Killwhitneydead.) just fall flat.
