Black Lives At The Golden Coast

Penance Soiree, the 2004 offering from L.A.-based swagger-rockers the Icarus Line, was a real modern-rock benchmark in a world suffering from emo/screamo overload, Clear Channel-sanctioned blandness and the tides of queefy indie-rock tedium. Lead singer Joe Cardamone spit out his street gospel while the rest of the band shored him up with a rock noise that was both urgent and groove-laden. Sadly, Black Lives At The Golden Coast only hints at their previous majesty. While they deliver some great street-fighting anthems (“Black Presents,” “Committed To Extinction”), the Line-men have decided that expanding their vision translates to riding the train of similarly prescient vibe merchants like Primal Scream (“Gets Paid”) and the Jesus And Mary Chain. Hey guys, guess what? Wolfmother’s fans called: They said they don’t care.
