The Spill Canvas - Abnormalities EP

Abnormalities EP

The Spill Canvas have been testing the patience of their fans over the past year. The South Dakota foursome's last full-length, No Really, I'm Fine, came out in the fall of 2007, and the band offered a few appeasements of an EP,Honestly, I'm Doing Okay, and a re-release of No Really with some additional B-sides in 2008. But after nothing in 2009, it's about time for some new Spill Canvas material and this three-song EP is a teasing appetizer of what a new record could sound like.

"Don't Let Your Enemies Become Friends" is an apt successor to the surging, slickly produced tracks on No Really, offering a catchy pop melody and chorus you immediately know the words to. "Good Graces, Bad Influence" sounds like it was written by Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump–in a good way–and has a bit more of an edge than some of Spill Canvas's past numbers. In these three songs it becomes clear that frontman Nick Thomas is over whatever heartbreak drove him to write No Really, which reveled in hooky angst and some very relatable moping. More new songs are coming in March–and from the sound of it, the wait will have been worth it
