Bad Powers - Bad Powers

Bad Powers

Bad Powers

When the three instrumentalists in Made Out Of Babies parted ways with singer Julie Christmas earlier this year, thus ending the band, the last thing anyone expected was for them to recruit another lead singer who sounds remarkably like Christmas for their new group. But that’s what’s going on for Bad Powers’ self-titled debut. Megan Tweed (also of the Family Curse) doesn’t have the same scary, guttural roar that Christmas has (and, really, who does?), so that leads to some more droned-out, gothier tracks like “Millennium” and some bluesy jams like “Chineseish,” but, still, nothing on this album is a far stretch from what these guys did in their previous band. While some could argue that Tweed has more range than Christmas, she doesn’t have nearly as much chutzpah, leaving Bad Powers just a little flat and samey by the end of its 10 songs. Yes, bands break up, move on and re-form as different bands with different singers—we all know and appreciate that. We can never go back in time and make something broken whole again. So as much as Bad Powers will make Made Out Of Babies fans pine for days gone by, at least there’s this interesting, if not underwhelming, album to dull the sting.
