When Brain Banger went through the history of Louisville, Kentucky, heavy music to tally their influences, they came to the same sum of their parts that Sleater-Kinney reached in the early ’90s in the Pacific Northwest. There’s a urgency to the music, a slight melodic bent, a heavy leaning on minor chords—and no fear of rocking out. Made up of two parts Young Widows and one part Lords, Brain Banger are a side project by definition; but where most side projects exist as a dumping ground for material not good enough for the main squeeze, Brain Banger split the difference between those two bands well. If Munsoned was released on cassette, it would be the perfect tape to pop into your ’94 Cutlass as you went down to cruise the dive bars in the old part of town. What more could you want from a rock ’n’ roll record?
