Broadheds

Broadheds

This slapped-together sorta-supergroup features sidemen from a variety of bands—Fitz And The Tantrums’ James King on sax, Beck/Nine Inch Nails bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen and session drummer Denny Weston Jr.—led by former Eulogies frontman Peter Walker. It’s punk in its ethos (13 songs in 29 minutes) and occasionally in its sonic companions (the Matches-esque “Tomorrow I Might Feel The Same”). “Outta Reach” is a slinky number reminiscent of Morphine, and “Pick Me Up” is a breezy ska number out of the Slackers’ playbook, but most of the rest of Broadheds is fast-paced garage rock with tons of sax skronk and oddly soulful vocals, but not a lot in the way of memorable hooks. Chicago quartet Prizzy Prizzy Please do this sort of unhinged madness better, but they haven’t put out an album in three years, so this will have to do.
