Let Me Run - Broken Strings

Let Me Run

Broken Strings EP

Broken Strings finds New Jersey flannel-punks Let Me Run testing out a six-pack of tracks on their newest leader, vocalist/guitarist Dan Maxwell. Having replaced ex-frontman Travis Omilian, Maxwell's voice often sounds pretty similar to Omilian's on record, exhibiting the same level of rasp with maybe a little more waver.

Musically, though, the band strip away the Americana flair and similarities to comrades the Gaslight Anthem prevalent on their 2009 full-length, Meet Me At The Bottom, in favor of an even more streamlined, melodic punk-tinged sound. The Loved Ones do remain a hearty RIYL, albeit if you take into account Let Me Run's penchant for slower and steadier motives and more sweeping buildups.

Broken Strings doesn't seem to jump out as vigorously as the standouts fromBottom, but it's hardly without its moments. You'll get some of the band's best flashes during its second half: "Scared As Shit" finds emotional resonance in faded group vocals, swelling guitars and mature melodies, and the nearly five-minute "Thank You My Dear" shows an interesting progression by way of Maxwell's measured delivery and a big chorus.
