FACT - Burundanga

FACT

Burundanga

Listening to Japanese six-piece FACT is always an intense experience. This latest record is no exception—Burundanga's 13 tracks whiz through a smorgasbord of musical genres, from mathcore to screamo, melodic hardcore to glossy, breakneck pop—often within the same song. There’s also a 57-second burst of avant-garde experimental noise called “Kyou” and a 15-second blast of furious death metal called “Mimic.” It’s not, however, as “out there” as the band perhaps believe it is—“Eighty Six” and “GSMD,” despite their polyrhythmic breakdowns, are also full of catchy, accessible hooks. The Enter Shikari-esque electronic punk of “1-4” is wonderfully challenging and insurrectionary, but, ironically, it’s the one song which doesn’t alter course a thousand times. Obviously, the point of FACT is to try to do everything, but, ironically, when they do so it sometimes sounds like they’re going through the motions. It’s not a novelty record per se, but the novelty soon wears off, preventing these songs from having the powerful and overwhelming effect they strive so hard to have.
