Jimmy Urine reinvents with synth in new album

Jimmy Urine

The Secret Cinematic Sounds Of Jimmy Urine

FILE UNDER: Synthesizers With Attitude

ROCKS LIKE: Gatekeeper, John Carpenter, Justice

WHAT’S DIFFERENT: As ringleader of Mindless Self Indulgence, Jimmy Urine kept things jittery and furious in a way that appealed to drum-and-bass enthusiasts and industrial-rock rivetheads. On this mostly instrumental solo offering, he explores more melodic, sequencer-driven material that will appeal to ’70s synth prog, ’80s new-wave electro and movie soundtracks like Tron and Escape From New York (hence the LP title).

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE: For a moment, forget about his years of rocking fast and being gloriously annoying in MSI. On this album, Urine has reinvented himself as a tempered electronic composer capable of Daft Punk percolations (“Phase”) and new age atmospheres (“Aching Addicted Affection Again”) alike. The best album of 1984—and 2024, come to think of it.

OUR PICK: “Not For Me”
