Why Should I Get Used To It

Since Fugazi went on hiatus eight years ago, bassist Joe Lally has recorded with all kinds of luminaries—including former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante and members of Frodus—in a variety of projects. But his least intriguing efforts, ironically, have been his solo albums. That changes with his third full-length, Why Should I Get Used To It. Recorded in his adopted home of Rome with a new band consisting of guitarist Elisa Abela and drummer Emanuele Tomasi, the album spotlights Lally’s greatest talent: avoiding the spotlight. With his trademark, understated funkiness and deceptively mellow vocals, he underpins Tomasi’s elasticity and Abela’s stinging, stunning avant-garde chops. At times, yes, it sounds like Fugazi—but at the same time, it’s far more quietly assured and humbly, even eerily, virtuosic. Kind of like Lally himself.
