Jule Vera pull off country twang and thoughtful ballads in 'Waiting On The Sun'

Waiting On The Sun

FILE UNDER: BADASS COUNTRY MEETS LOVELORN ROCK

ROCKS LIKE: We Are The In Crowd, Set It Off, Against The Current

WHAT’S DIFFERENT: The debut album gloves have come off: Jule Vera are ready to take some risks. For something this diverse, there’s still cohesion on Waiting On The Sun, from the piano-bar feel of “Something Good,” the twinkly guitars of “Bad Company” and even connecting with their Alabama roots on “Porch Swing.”

WHY YOU SHOULD CARE: A lot of bands want to be “genre-defying,” but few make the album to prove it. While Jule Vera show they can pull off country twang and thoughtful ballads with the best, they show their strength when they lean into busting guitars and some kick-ass belt-out-in-the-middle-of-your-shower choruses (“Running,” “Can’t Help”).

OUR PICK: “Running”
