Little Envy walk the line between the most extreme pop and the softest metal on new EP

Little Envy

From Inside My Head

Coming almost a year after their self-titled release, San Francisco’s Little Envy have returned with an EP, From Inside My Head. The duo recently opened for This Wild Life at their No More Bad Day’s benefit show, and with songs like “Ocean” it’s no wonder: The slowest track on the album has vocalist Joseph de los Reyes’ more hoarse voice accompanied by a loan acoustic guitar.

With soft, sweeping vocals, strained screams that don’t quite reach a growl and heavy riffs sprinkled throughout the four songs, Little Envy’s sound is reminiscent of the direction Bring Me the Horizon took on their anthemic “Drown”—walking the line between the most extreme pop and the softest metal.

Each song suggests inspiration from various bands and genres, from (the aforementioned “Ocean,” as well as the more post-hardcore leaning “Personal Mercenary.”)  While the album makes for a catchy collection of different styles, there's nothing here that truly illustrates an awareness of the band's genuine strengths—that doesn't sound like something that has already been done a million times over.  (HOUSEWORK RECORDS; http://www.houseworkrecords.limitedrun.com/) Heather Mulgannon
