Mikey Jukebox - Mikey Jukebox

Mikey Jukebox

Mikey Jukebox

For some people, bridging the gap between Green Album-era Weezer and late-’70s disco beats would be nothing more than a precious gimmick. For former Longwave drummer Mike James, it’s the basis of his new one-man project, Mikey Jukebox. Cutting big guitar hooks with busy backbeats and run-of-the-mill melodies seems like territory for 2002, but James’ true affection for Donna Summer allows for some intriguing arrangements. James is at his best, however, when he drops his disco schtick and delivers straight out-of-Slade ’70s power-pop on “Open Up Your Heart.” On that song—and that song only—does James seem justified in name-dropping rock ’n’ roll. When that phrase is consistently sung over the top of a rat-a-tat drum machine, the credibility of Mikey Jukebox is greatly distrusted.
