Bottomless Pit

Hammer Of The Gods

[4.5/5]

Two years after the tragic death of their drummer Michael Dahlquist, Silkworm bassist Tim Midgett and guitarist Andy Cohen have finally returned alongside members of Seam and .22 via their new project, Bottomless Pit. Despite the unfortunate circumstances surrounding the act’s formation, their first output, Hammer Of The Gods, is truly transcendent. While the album is inevitably similar to Silkworm, it’s also extremely varied, with songs that range from straightforward rockers (“The Cardinal Movements”) to gentle ballads (“Human Out Of Me”) to minimalist dirges (“Sevens Sing”). However, the highlight of Hammer Of The Gods is “Leave The Light On,” an improvisational track propelled by Cohen’s inventive guitar playing, which ebbs and flows through every state of the human condition and leaves the listener emotionally spent yet invariably satisfied.
