Is Dead

[4.5/5]

Is Dead comprises some of the most ambitious, stunning songwriting melodic hardcore has witnessed in years, even if Crime In Stereo seem to give a consistent nod to Brand New both vocally and musically. Regardless, what results is an expanded palette of guitar textures, incalculable transitions and countless vocal/instrumental tracks-all within 36 minutes. Frontman Kristian Hallbert’s vocal range is astounding, retaining his raspy demeanor while delivering falsetto highs and baritone lows. Lyrically, the band weave picturesque metaphors and spill forth personal and social conflicts so careful and articulate you’d think they were speech-writing for impeached politicians. Still, CIS’s upbeat, melodic punk bombast remains in dynamic numbers like "…But You Are Vast," "Nixon" and "Choker" while offering up slower, darker and atmospheric narratives like "Unfortunate Tourist" and the bone-chilling "Almost Ghostless/Above The Gathering Oceans." Is Dead is an absolutely haunting and incredible landmark effort. (BRIDGE NINE) Brian Shultz
