Lake Trout

Not Them, You

[3] Lake Trout originated as an electronically enhanced jam band, and their songs have evolved into dense aural Rorschach tests, containing hints of progressive pop, psychedelia and new wave. Like most something-for-everyone acts, Lake Trout occasionally succumb to blandness on Not Them, You: Ed Harris’ guitar leads chime, slide and undulate, but they’re often tethered to tepid electro-rock structures. The title track, a DJ Shadow-style piano-and-percussion instrumental, intrigues, but it’s just two minutes long. Organic improvisational acts instinctively know which sonic snippets to expand-Lake Trout need to rediscover this ability. (PALM/RX) Andrew Miller
