Spank Rock & Benny Blanco

Spank Rock & Benny Blanco

Bangers & Cash EP

[3.5/5]

It’s no secret Spank Rock owe quite a bit to 2 Live Crew. They may call it B-More Club, but the speaker-shakin’ bass that rocked the group’s debut, YoYoYoYoYo, was basically the modern incarnation of Miami Bass. Besides the low end, their MC (also named Spank Rock) spits rhymes that make Luther Campbell proud-usually about female body parts. Here (sans the rest of the group), he teams up with Disco D protégé Benny Blanco for an EP that serves as a full-on tribute to the Crew-from the mock cover all the way to the samples. With songs like “Pu$$y,” “Bitch!” and “B-O-O-T-A-Y,” you pretty much get the picture. It’s a guilty pleasure that most indie-rap fans will pretend they don’t dig, but behind closed doors will be blasting at full volume. It’s raunchy, it’s dirty, and while you’re gonna feel guilty liking it, Bangers & Cash is undeniably addictive. (DOWNTOWN) Eddie Fleisher
