We Can Breathe Under Alcohol

[2/5] There are 10 people in An Angle, though they’re often underemployed: For a several-song stretch on We Can Breathe Under Alcohol, singer Kris Anaya plays fingerpicked folk without much auxiliary adornment. These skeletal tracks bear little resemblance to the lushly orchestrated ditties that open the album, but Anaya’s stubbornly repetitive lyrics confirm their mutual parenthood. Lest anyone mistake the album’s title for cute-and-clever indie wordplay, Anaya references liquor in every track, and thrice decries the indie scene for good measure. However, by spreading his conceptual content so thin, Anaya makes the album’s jarring tone shifts seem less like bipolar diversity and more like the work of someone who ran out of arrangement ideas.
