Dj BC VS Big D And The Kids Table
Strictly Mixed And Mashed
[3/5]
The world of mash-up albums is a prickly pear of compromise. Obviously, whichever genres or beats are being sandwiched in by the DJ are at risk of being diluted to their most basic levels for the sake of the coalescing. Which can only end up one of two ways: Ridiculous or kind of cool. Strictly Mixed And Mashed–the new project from Boston’s DJ BC, who made headlines for his unlawful usage of Beatles material on The Beastles mash-up of the Beatles and Beastie Boys in 2004–lands much closer to the latter. Splicing songs from ska revival hangers-on Big D And The Kids Table, DJ BC manipulates spastic beats and repetitive blips-and-bloops to staggering splendor, especially on “Robot President,” a thinly veiled anti-Bush tirade. The only problem is that songs’ messages end up ringing a bit hollow when packaged within the dance aesthetic. If the intent is to forego the message in place of the beats, then regardless of how good it sounds, it remains a bit soulless. Still, the cuts on this album are irresistibly catchy, and you’d be remiss not to shake your tail feather to tracks like “Dave’s Shiny New Rap” or “Dem Kids Suck.” (FORK IN HAND) Ryan Prado
