Black One

[5/5] It’s cool if you can’t immediately tell whether Black One is–as the members of this extreme-doom collective purport–the darkest Sunn0))) recording yet; it takes a special sort of dedication to break down auditory blackness of this caliber into varying degrees of nihility, and an altogether more committed level of listening to contrast that with the putrid black maw that is Sunn0)))’s back catalog. But for anyone not yet convinced by the time track two-which vaguely recalls a Winston Churchill speech slowed down to 16 rpm, buoyed by an attack column of overdriven SUNN amps-wrenches itself into gear, it’s clear Black One is a whole other level of subsonic misery, a sort of post-metal exploration of agony, claustrophobia and logical running times. (Track seven, “Báthory Erzsébet,” is an utterly merciless 16 minutes, half of which comprise a single subsonic drone.) And here we thought Sunn0))) were just being ironic by titling their last two EPs White. (SOUTHERN LORD) Aaron Burgess
