The Classic Crime

The Silver Cord

[3/5]

The sophomore full-length from Tooth & Nail artists the Classic Crime follows the well-worn route of beginning on a promising note, then quickly descending into something of a join-the-flock existence. Volleying between introspective brooders on “The End” and “Just A Man,” the band open up a wormhole of stinging post-punk machismo before taking a sharp curve and skidding the bumper into the wall. There are moments of mischief, such as on “Salt In The Snow,” but the sentiment is lost within an ocean of ultra-poppy noodling and journal-entry disclosure. It’s hard to tell if “Grave Digging”-a pseudo-decadent riff-rocker-is tongue-in-cheek ’80s homage or sincere youthful abandon; but either way, the cut-and-paste quotient of a majority of the songs relegates The Silver Cord to that of well-executed, yet veritably forgettable.
